The explosion of Medium publications makes it hard to solicit stories

One of the things that I liked about Medium when I started here, a few years ago, was the notion that you could ask an author if they would like to contribute an existing post for a publication, like Work Futures. However, it seems that today nearly every post I see has already been published at a publication.

Medium’s policy is that a story can only be published at one publication (and on the author’s personal profile).

This means that over time there will be increasingly little of this sort of cooperation at Medium, and instead a more formal set of practices will emerge outside the platform.

I’m not sure that this is terrible, but the entire set of affordances that Medium structured for soliciting posts will become obsolete, and people will be discussing contributions outside of Medium’s tools. Like I said, that’s not the end of the world, but I don’t think it’s what was intended.
